The Institute of Molecular Science and Technologies (ISTM) was established on September 2000 by merging seven CNR Research Centres (four of which in Milano, two in Padova, and one in Perugia).

It is a distinguishing feature of the ISTM activity to cover the most relevant fields of chemical sciences, as ISTM staff are engaged in research into the following fields:

  • Theoretical and Experimental Modeling of Molecular and Nanostructured Systems.
  • Design, Synthesis and Characterization of Precursors and Functional Molecules.
  • Development and application of new technologies to chemistry, material science, informatics, telecommunications, and safeguard of cultural heritage.

These expertises are closely integrated so that a complete and qualified approach to scientific problems is achieved.
The ISTM is characterized by a strong interaction with the academic world, which comes straight from the long lasting cooperation established by the above mentioned Research Centres and the University Departments. The ISTM has national and international collaborative links and encourages higher degree and research links with industry and government organisations.

The Department of Environmental Science and Policy (ESP) was born in April 2017 with the aim to create a research and training facility specifically devoted to the environmental sciences, characterized by multidisciplinary skills required for an integrated analysis of the environment.

The Department addresses the environmental subjects in their broadest context, focusing on the coexistence, in the same scientific frame, of the widest expertise background and on the development of a multidisciplinary method.

One of the most relevant aspect is related to the integration of the natural sciences with the economic and social ones, each of them being essential in every sustainable solution to environmental issues.

Professors and researchers of the Department of Environmental Science and Policy belong to different but complementary subject areas. They propose to pursue the three missions of the university institution – research, training, third mission – by developing scientific research activities of advanced training, provision of information, knowledge dissemination and technological transfer in the environmental field, thereby contributing with their own skills to a shared effort of multidisciplinary analysis and synthesis.

The INSTITUTE FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY conducts applied research on ADVANCED ENERGY SYSTEMS, based on or including SUSTAINABLE ENERGY SOURCES.

Its activities include NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH PROJECTS, as well as direct COOPERATION WITH INDUSTRY PARTNERS. Industry-related projects normally involve the development of new products and the evaluation of technological solutions. The Institute also supports the promotion of renewable energy technologies and assists political decision-makers the scientific consultancy.​

The Institute’s research involves the extensive use of DYNAMIC SIMULATIONS and ULTIPHYSICS MODELLING of advanced energy systems and buildings.​​
Scientific results are based on LABORATORY TESTS of single components and integrated energy systems, as well as the MONITORING of applied demonstration sites, experimental outdoor installations and residential buildings. The Institute offers support also in the elaboration of COMPLEX ENERGY MODELS as DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM for single energy systems or buildings as well as for urban and regional areas.
